Army Art Exhibition hits 44

Army Art, Perth’s longest-running charity art exhibition, is now in its 44th year.

Started in 1974 by the SASR Auxiliary to showcase artwork by emerging West Australian artists and to raise funds for charity.

Army Art has a focus on supporting Defence charities but has expanded over the years to provide a substantial amount in donations to a wide range of not-for-profits across WA.

This year the event will proudly support Tiny Sparks WA and Defence-focused beneficiary Working Spirit.

Army Art Publicity Coordinator Michelle Saleeba said both charity organisations, started by passionate individuals, were committed to ensuring positive change in our community by assisting WA families as they go through difficult life transitions.

“In 2018 Army Art will be held from 24 to 26 August and our goal is to raise $75,000 through ticket and art sales as well as sponsorship,” Michelle said.

“Our supporters community spirit ensures that our annual exhibition remains the largest fundraising fine art exhibition in WA.

“And, this year, we are again looking to the philanthropic and art-loving community of Perth to help make that happen.”

She said another equally important goal of Army Art was to continue to provide a platform for emerging artists to exhibit their work.

“Showcasing a wide variety of art, especially work by veteran artists, is part of what makes the Army Art exhibition so dynamic.

“One such emerging veteran artist, whose first foray into exhibiting his artwork was with Army Art, is Ben Pronk.

“Working predominantly in portraiture and using ballpoint pen and watercolour, to render images of family and friends, Ben said he found it was so much more powerful to draw someone he knew well, as he finds he puts something of his relationships into his work.

“That connection with his subjects, combined with a talent for capturing likeness, makes for visually compelling portraits.

“Having exhibited a couple of times since his first Army Art show in 2016, it’ll be interesting to see where Ben takes his art from here.”

You can read more of Ben’s story on the Army Art web site here.
