Australia gave up the repats – then it bought the care back

Dear Editor,

Australia gave up direct ownership of the Repatriation Hospitals, but it did not give up its obligation to veterans.

Veterans gained access to a much wider hospital network, but the Commonwealth replaced ownership with contracts, payments and monitoring.

Government handed over the keys, but not the promise.

The question now is whether those safeguards still deliver what veterans were promised, and who is accountable when they do not.

Changing who owns the hospital never changed who owes the veteran.
