Events in February

Whether you have a few hours or a whole day, there is a lot to discover at the Memorial this month. Below are a few highlights, but be sure to visit the Memorial’s events page to see everything on offer this month.

Eric Bogle: Return to no man’s land

Join Michael J.K. Walsh for the screening of the new documentary film, Eric Bogle: return to no man’s land. It follows the songwriter back to the Somme battlefields that inspired him to write the modern masterpiece “No man’s land (the green fields of France)”.

Join Memorial staff for a special curator-led tour of this unique exhibition about the history of Australia’s Special Operations Forces from the Second World War to Afghanistan.

King of the battlefield: artillery and the First World War

First World War Galleries

Join Research Centre staff and learn about artillery, the most important weapon in the First World War, using the vast array of source material in the Memorial’s archives.

Hearts and minds: wartime propaganda

How Dr Seuss and the Squander Bug went to war

Long before becoming famous as the author of The Cat in the Hat and The Lorax, Dr Seuss used his talents to produce political cartoons and propaganda during the Second World War.

Theodor Seuss Geisel wrote and illustrated more than 60 children’s books under the pen name Dr Seuss, but the American also used his artistic abilities to fight fascism and aid the Allied war effort.

The grandson of German immigrants, Geisel had been working in advertising and had already published his first children’s book, And to think that I saw it on Mulberry Street,when war broke out. Read more…

Behind-the-scenes tour for Friends of the Memorial

The Victoria Cross is the highest award in the British and Australian honour systems, given for acts of extreme gallantry in the face of the enemy. Since its inception in 1896, 100 Australians have been invested with the award. The lives of these men and  their involvement in actions from the Boer War to the war in Afghanistan will be explored in a new book to be published by the Australian War Memorial in 2018. Join it’s authors, Craig Blanch and Aaron Pegram, for a panel discussion about the men who received this coveted medal.
