The Air Warfare Instructor Course has for the first time encompassed an integrated warfare team of Fighter Combat Instructors, Airspace Battle Managers, Fighter Intelligence Instructors and Fighter Combat Controllers with elements being based on ground and airborne platforms which also included the Heron unmanned aerial system.

The aircraft will begin arriving at RAAF Base Amberley as from 12 noon on Thursday 29 June.

Commander Air Warfare Centre Air Commodore Joe Iervasi said the returning aircraft transiting through RAAF Base Amberley from Exercise Diamond Storm, would return to RAAF Base Williamtown as a final activity in a month-long intensive phase of the challenging five-month course.

“The return to RAAF Base Williamtown, which includes activities 50km off the New South Wales coast, is known as Exercise Dawn Strike and is the culmination of the Air Warfare Instructor Course and represents the final mission prior to graduation,” Air Commodore Iervasi said.

“The Diamond Series of exercises is designed to integrate people and systems for complex warfighting as fifth-generation capabilities come into service.

“As our platforms interact, electronically, so too must the human elements interact more closely to get the greatest benefit from this technology.

The Air Warfare Instructors Course, developed by the Air Warfare Centre, is designed to prepare instructors to be effective in the integrated warfighting space.

“Graduates will provide leadership in the development of future tactics and help determine how those tactics can be used to enhance the ADFs joint warfighting capability using the fifth generation platforms,” Air Commodore Iervasi said.
