Permanent DVA Deputy Commissioner for NT
A permanent Deputy Commissioner for the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) will be established in the Northern Territory to ensure veterans continue to access the highest level of support.
Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Dan Tehan said the government had worked closely with the local Defence and ex-service community to deliver this positive outcome.
“Following a review of the duties of the temporary Deputy Commissioner position in the Northern Territory and extensive consultation with the local veteran community, including the Northern Territory RSL and the Vietnam Veteran community the government has decided to appoint a permanent Deputy Commissioner.
“I would like to make special mention of Bob Shewring from the Vietnam Veterans Association who was a passionate advocate for the local veteran community on this issue.
“The Deputy Commissioner will operate as an on-site line manager, undertaking representational duties, engaging with the Australian Defence Forces, local ex-service organisations and undertaking on-base presentations for transitioning ADF staff. The position will also provide a supervisory role to DVA staff in the Darwin office.
“The Deputy Commissioner and staff provide face-to-face services through a Veterans’ Access Network (VAN) shopfront in Darwin and information services are also available through an arrangement with the Department of Human Services in Alice Springs.”
The Deputy Commissioner role will be advertised in early 2017.
