The Australian government has caved to public pressure in a major backdown on its proposed sell-off of historic Defence sites.

Sydney’s iconic Victoria Barracks is no longer up for sale – instead it will be transferred to the Department of Finance to be maintained as a publicly owned heritage site.
“Victoria Barracks Sydney has a special place in our nation’s history — and we will be keeping it in public hands,” Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said.
Victoria Barracks Melbourne, Fort Queenscliff and Point Cook (RAAF Williams) will also be spared from the auctioneers’ gavel.
This news is currently spreading across the Internet, with Prime Minister Albanese said to make an official announcement later today.
