Britain’s Army Chief warns of war – Australia has some catching up to do

Dear Editor,

Britain’s Army chief is openly warning that soldiers may soon have to fight and civilians may have to make sacrifices.

Australia is not ignoring the problem. The National Defence Strategy recognises civilian preparedness, and a Parliamentary Joint Committee is examining essential supplies, infrastructure, government coordination and the role of business and communities.

That inquiry matters.

But it should also trigger a much broader public conversation about what prolonged conflict could actually demand of Australians.

Fuel, freight, power, ports and communications are not peripheral to defence. They help determine whether the ADF can keep operating.

The inquiry is a good start. The national conversation must follow.
