Is DVA putting budget savings ahead of veterans’ tinnitus care?

Dear Editor,
DVA says more than 80 per cent of veterans in its tinnitus treatment pilot improved. That is welcome.
But DVA has not published what happened to their subsequent permanent impairment assessments, or whether reduced compensation liabilities were modelled when the pilot was designed.
Effective treatment should always be the goal. But treatment must not become a mechanism for fitting veterans’ lawful entitlements inside a government savings target.
If savings were part of the business case, veterans and Parliament deserve to know.
Repatriation is a national obligation, not an expenditure envelope.
