Veterans made themselves impossible to ignore – the government buckled

The government has scrapped its proposed $5000 veterans allied-health threshold after four months of sustained pressure from veterans, families, advocates and supporters.

Keogh says the government “heard from veterans”, after grassroots opposition became public protest and parliamentary pressure while he and the Department of Veterans’ Affairs kept defending and repackaging the measure.

Keogh announced the retreat, but a Budget measure carrying hundreds of millions of dollars in reduced expenditure was never his decision alone, so the backflip belongs to the Albanese Government.
