Labor can sack Keogh without sacking Keogh

Dear Editor,

Veterans Minister Matt Keogh should be sacked.

But veterans need to understand what ‘sacked’ may look like inside the Labor Party.

Keogh’s factional backing may help protect his place in the ministry, but, it does not guarantee him the Veterans’ Affairs portfolio.

Anthony Albanese can remove Keogh from Veterans’ Affairs and give him another ministerial job, just as Andrew Giles lost Immigration in 2024 but remained in the ministry.

That distinction matters.

Veterans should keep demanding Keogh’s removal. He has lost the confidence required to remain Veterans’ Affairs Minister.

But if pressure continues to build, do not be surprised if Albanese attempts a political compromise – Keogh survives, but veterans get a new minister.

It would remove him from Veterans’ Affairs, but it would not be the full accountability many veterans are demanding.
