Nowra Veterans Wellbeing Centre’s new mural painted by community

Local veterans and community members across the Shoalhaven region, joined together to commence painting a mural at the Nowra Veteran Wellbeing Centre, with the mural depicting the needs and goings on of veterans across the community.

RSL Lifecare Nowra Veterans Wellbeing Centre Manager Jason Grimes led the initiative, which was supported by veterans and their families, Federal Member for Gilmore Fiona Phillips, representatives from TAFE New South Wales, the Department of Veterans’ Affairs and their families and local community members.

“The painting was a bonding exercise for the community and is one of many activities that the Veteran Wellbeing Centre has in place, encouraging veterans and their families in the region to reach out and seek support alongside one another,” Mr Grimes said.

“Along with the mural creation, we were fortunate to also have local surf podcaster, Matt King hold a surfboard-art workshop for veterans and community members to draw, paint and write messages on surfboards that would otherwise go to waste.

“It was an amazing experience for all who attended.”

Local artist, Kade Valja, a regular contributor for RSL LifeCare, completed the mural in February.

In addition to the mural, local artists Van Gor and Kade Valja are collaborating on a surfboard to be donated to RSL LifeCare Veteran Services to help raise money for the centre’s support services and events.
