The event was opened by the Minister for Defence Industry Melissa Price who then toured the exhibition floor throughout the day.

The comprehensive conference program, listing more than 70 conferences, symposia and presentations, kicked off with the International Maritime Conference, and the Royal Australian Navy’s Sea Power 2022 conference, opened by Australian Chief of Navy, Vice Admiral Michael Noonan.

In opening the Sea Power 2022 Conference Vice Admiral Noonan was quick to reiterate the importance of Australia’s sea lanes to the country’s economy and security.

“The sea is Australia’s life blood,” he said.

“We are absolutely dependent upon it.

“We trade and travel by our sea – our economy, our prosperity, our way of life, all count on the sea.

“Good order at sea is vital to our welfare and to our national security.”

Vice Admiral Noonan told the conference that maritime security in the region was about partnerships and shared responsibilities, key themes for Sea Power 2022.

“As our region deals with an elevated strategic competition, the Royal Australian Navy and the Australian Defence Force more broadly will operate closely alongside our allies and like-minded partners as a force for good against tyranny, oppression and authoritarianism,” he said.

“We recognise that in our region our navies and our maritime forces must work together to exercise good influence, to defend others against oppression and to secure the interests of our nations and safeguard the welfare of our citizens.

“The Indo Pacific is our region.”

Running across the three days of the INDO PACIFIC 2022 International Maritime Exposition, Navy’s 2022, Sea Power Conference will explore the broad theme “The Indo-Pacific Maritime Domain in the 21st Century – A Commonality of Purpose”.

This theme explores geopolitics, maritime security and the maritime ecosystem in the Indo-Pacific, the ‘grey zone’, and the importance of cooperative and collaborative regional partnerships in the Indo-Pacific.

Vice Admiral Noonan thanked the representatives of industry attending the conference, as providers of Navy capability.

Your contribution and your ongoing support provide an exciting and valuable backdrop to the overall conference.

“Your exhibitions offer a unique promotional medium, allowing two-way personal interaction between potential customers and your great organisations.”
