Navy rips up wood chips in Murwillumbah as boss looks on

With clean up efforts in south-east Queensland drawing to a close, Commander of Operation Flood Assist, Major General David Thomae, visited Murwillumbah as part of a tour of northern New South Wales.

Major General Thomae met with Byron Shire Council Mayor Michael Lyon and Tweed Shire Council Mayor Chris Cherry to discuss the Australian Defence Force (ADF) contribution to their communities.  

At Knox Park in Murwillumbah, Major General Thomae met with Royal Australian Navy personnel helping remove spoilt soil in the park and replacing it with fresh wood chips.  

“The overall community support towards the ADF involvement and contribution within these communities is very positive, and the work you are doing is very much appreciated,” Major General Thomae said.

Maritime warfare officer Sub Lieutenant Robert Lloyd welcomed the chance to help out the community.  

“Being able to clean and restore the park makes a real difference and brings some joy back to the locals whose lives have been affected by the flooding,” Sub Lieutenant Lloyd said.  

“The whole team has come here with a great attitude and really jumped in to help out we’re honoured to be here in their time of need.” 

Major General Thomae’s visit to northern New South Wales will continue with a visit to Lismore.
