HMAS Choules costs four times more to maintain than an Anzac-class frigate

HMAS Choules costs four times more to maintain than an Anzac-class frigate.

That’s the assessment of CONTACT magazine’s editor Brian Hartigan following the announcement today that a $60.6-million two-year ($30.3 million per year) in-service support contract to maintain HMAS Choules has been awarded by the Australian government.

This compares to a five-year group contract for all eight Anzac-class frigates the then government let in 2012 for approximately $300 million – or $7.5 million per ship per year.

Choules’ maintenance contract was awarded to Atlantic & Peninsula Australia Pty Ltd (A&P Australia), a subsidiary of the UK-based A&P Group who opened a local facility specifically to service HMAS Choules.

A&P Australia employs 30 people and the contract is a fixed-price performance-based commercial arrangement.

Parent company A&P Group Limited has been maintaining the Bay-Class Landing Ship Dock HMAS Choules (formerly RFA Largs Bay) since she was acquired ‘on the cheap’ from the UK Government in October 2011 for $100 million.
