Last week, Captain Tom officially became the oldest person to achieve a number 1 hit single on the UK music charts, beating Sir Tom Jones’ 2009 Islands in the Stream when he was 68 – and is also now officially recognised by the Guinness Book of World Records for the most money raised by charity walk (individual), when he passed the £28 million mark.

His total fundraising effort has since gone past £29 million – AU$56million – and still climbing.

All money raised from the Number ! song are also going to his charity appeal – as are the coins and notes included in some of the 100,000 (and counting) birthday cards he has received so far – so many birthday cards in fact, there’s a dedicated team of 60 volunteers set up in his local school hall just to deal with them.

Captain Tom will turn 100 years old on Thursday.
