Inaugural Fleet Base West Photography Competition

The inaugural Fleet Base West Photography Competition saw more than 100 entries from budding photographers that captured the ‘People, Places and Stuff’ associated with the Royal Australian Navy based on Garden Island.

Entries were all carefully considered for creative flair, eye-catching detail and technique against the three competition categories, before being shortlisted to 50 finalists.

Finalists were judged by Mayor of Rockingham Barry Sammels, Commanding Officer of HMAS Stirling Captain Ainsley Morthorpe, Navy Imagery Unit-West Chief Petty Officer Damian Pawlenko and Chris Dalton of Nikon Australia.

“We were absolutely blown away by the calibre of all the entries and had a hard time choosing the category winners” Captain Morthorpe said.

“We all looked at the entries from a different perspective, be that technical or the raw emotion the image made us feel – it was an amazing, and pleasingly challenging opportunity that we were all excited to be a part of.

“I was also pleased to see the broad range of entrants who represent our community and having the Mayor as a judge emphasised this aspect.”

The Fleet Base West Photography Competition held its exhibition opening and award presentations on Friday 22 November, presenting five framed certificates for ‘Highly Commended’ entries, before announcing the overall and category winners.
