Minister for Defence Christopher Pyne said the replacement project was progressing and was due for consideration by cabinet later this year.

“The Young Endeavour program is recognised internationally as a leading youth development program, with more than 500 young Australians taking part every year,” Mr Pyne said.

“More than 13,600 young Australians have participated in the scheme since January 1988.

“After 31 years of dedicated service the Young Endeavour is now approaching the end of her operational life and this project will deliver a new vessel by late 2023.

“The search for a new design is progressing and once selected, the new vessel will be built in Australia.”

Designed by Colin Mudie FRINA and built at Brooke Yachts (now defunct) in England, she was gifted to Australia by the United Kingdom for Australia’s bicentenary in 1988.

Young Endeavour is a brigantine (a two-masted sailing ship with a square-rigged foremast and a mainmast rigged fore and aft).

She measures 44 metres and displaces 239 tonnes.

STS Young Endeavour is designed to travel at up to 14 knots under sail and up to 10 knots under power.
