Pandanus Park memorial gets a special upgrade

The memorial at Pandanus Park Veterans Retreat on Cape York was showing signs of wear after many years of battling the rigors of ‘the wet’, river floods and the dry, endless baking of hot Aussie sunshine.

CAPTIONVeterans’ memorial at Pandanus Park, far-north Queensland, get’s an upgrade.

And along came the cavalry – with the Engineer Support Regiment busy on a community task in the little town of Laura in far north Queensland, their commanding officer agreed that an opportunity project could be undertaken to rebuild the memorial.

A grant was secured through Saluting Their Service along with funds already raised by Pandanus Park to fund the upgrade.

The Engineer Support Regiment, with elements of 17 and 21 Construction Squadrons, donated their off-duty time to help the Pandanus Park veterans who were camped there to do the deed.

And what a mighty job they did.

The old memorial along with it’s memories was kept, incorporated into the new, like a set of younger arms holding memories together.

The entire Pandanus Park family gave thanks to those young men for their efforts in the rebuild and for giving up their free time.
