Matt Keogh blames the profiteers – but DVA built their business model

Dear Editor,

Veterans’ Minister Matt Keogh is right to condemn businesses that exploit veterans.

But blaming the profiteers is not enough.

DVA created a system where complexity makes veterans valuable to intermediaries, government funding separates the veteran from the bill, and weak oversight can turn care into a business model.

Government should chase fraud, regulate conflicts and prosecute wrongdoing.

But removing one operator without fixing the incentives simply leaves the door open for the next one.

Four Corners exposed the wildlife.

DVA still needs to explain how it built the ecosystem.
