Boxer on leash in Port Kembla

Just thought I’d share this pic I snapped in a drive-by today in Port Kembla, NSW – Boxer CRV.

Rheinmetall Defence Australia is bidding the Boxer 8×8 Combat Reconnaissance Vehicle in response to the Commonwealth Government of Australia’s LAND 400 Phase 2 – Mounted Combat Reconnaissance Capability Request for Tender (RFT).

Land 400 Phase 2 will deliver 225 Combat Reconnaissance Vehicles to the Australian Army.

The decision on which one is due very soon.

The other vehicle in the competition is the AMV-35 from BAE Systems Australia/Patria.

The Boxer’s visit to the Illawarra may or may not have been coincidental to nearby Bisalloy Steels’ announcement the following day that they had landed $900,000-worth of work on Rafael’s globally-deployed add-on armour range for Armoured Fighting Vehicles.

A Bisalloy statement said the contract marked the appointment of Bisalloy to Rafael’s global supply chain and followed the successful completion of an extensive testing and evaluation program that included a detailed assessment of not only Bisalloy’s product range but also the company’s technical expertise, production management systems and global-supply capability.

“The performance of Bisalloy and its BISALLOY® Armour steel range during our testing and evaluation program was highly impressive,” Rafael Australia’s General Manager Ido Spitzer.

“New supply-chain partners have to meet the highest standard of capability and product performance to participate in our programs because ultimately lives depend on the performance of our armoured vehicles in combat situations.”

Rafael is an Israel-based company, with a new Melbourne-based subsidiary, that develops and manufactures advanced defense systems for the Israeli Defense Forces and foreign customers.

Bisalloy Steels is Australia’s only manufacturer of high-tensile and abrasion-resistant quenched and tempered steel plate used for armour, structural and wear-resistant steel applications.

Minister for Defence Industry Christopher Pyne said the contract with Rafael was evidence that small-to-medium sized companies in regional Australia could successfully compete and win global supply-chain contracts with big defence companies.

“I am delighted Wollongong-based Bisalloy Steels will provide the armour range for armoured fighting vehicles which will be used to protect allied soldiers in combat,” Minister Pyne said.
