Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Dan Tehan today announced that Australian schools would receive an educational kit in preparation for Remembrance Day on 11 November.
“The educational kit will assist schools to plan personal and respectful Remembrance Day activities,” Mr Tehan said.
“On the 11th day of the 11th month the world marks the Armistice and the official end of the First World War.
“The First World War had a profound impact on our country with so many Australians killed and wounded.
“As a nation we must teach the next generation about the service and sacrifice of our ancestors as well the cost this country has paid defending its freedoms and values.
“Schools play an important role in ensuring the youngest members of our community have an understanding of Australia’s involvement in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations.”
This year’s educational kit will include a Remembrance Day commemorative poster, the 2018 DVA calendar, an educational resource and flyers promoting new online publications about Australian peacekeeping and the 2018 Anzac Day Schools’ Awards.
“This year’s Remembrance Day poster will honour the significant contribution of Australian Peacekeepers over the past 70 years,” Mr Tehan said.
“A key part of this year’s educational resource is the sixth instalment in the Century of Service series, which explores stories of Australians finding joy and laughter in simple pleasures like sport and music amongst the horrors of war.”
Schools will receive the educational kit in October with resources also available to download via the DVA Anzac Portal.
ANZAC Day Schools Awards 2017 winners
Mr Tehan today also announced the winners of the Anzac Day Schools’ Awards for 2017 saying the quality of the entries this year had been extremely high.
Woodbridge Primary School in Western Australia and Brooks High School in Tasmania were the winners in their state as well as the national prize winners for primary and secondary schools, respectively.
Mr Tehan said 79 schools nationwide had entered the Anzac Day School Awards.
“The Anzac Day School Awards is a competition that encourages learning about Australia’s wartime history and commemorating the service of Australians on Anzac Day,” Mr Tehan said.
“Every school that entered displayed great initiative and creativity with their entry and the respect for our Defence personnel was obvious.
“As a nation it is important that we never forget the service and sacrifice of the men and women who serve in defence of our country.
“We keep that memory alive by instilling respect for our wartime history and an understanding of the importance of Anzac Day in our future generations.”
Mr Tehan said the Brooks High School winning entry was a collaboration between Digital Arts and Dance/Drama students that imagined what it was like to walk ‘in the shoes of the Anzacs’.
“The Woodbridge Primary School students created posters displaying information about Light Horsemen killed in action in the Gaza campaign after researching the battle using the Department of Veterans’ Affairs Anzac Portal and Australian War Memorial website.”
