The Invictus Games start in Toronto, Canada, today and run until 30 September.
With the countdown clock almost run down on the highly-anticipated international adaptive sports competition, the athletes and their families and friends who travelled with the team to support their efforts are enjoying the hospitality of Toronto until games time.
Minister for Veterans’ Affairs and Defence Personnel Dan Tehan wished our Australian athletes good luck as the 2017 Invictus Games kicks off today in Toronto, Canada.
Mr Tehan, who is representing the Australian Government at the Invictus Games, has urged every Australian to throw their support behind the team.
“Through the Invictus Games the 43 current and former Defence personnel representing Australia have been given an opportunity to further their recovery, challenge themselves and inspire others,” Mr Tehan said.
“On behalf of the Australian Government, I hope every athlete competing in the games does so at the best of their ability and with the knowledge that Australians are cheering their success and applauding their bravery.”
Invictus Games is an initiative of HRH Prince Harry and will bring together more than 550 serving and former military personnel from 17 nations, who have been wounded, injured or become ill during their military service.
A team of 43 is representing Australia this year.
The ADF and RSL have been involved with the Invictus Games since its inception, with teams competing in London in 2014 and Orlando last year.
Australia will host the fourth Invictus Games in Sydney in October next year.
