Talisman Sabre – beach and air insertions begin

The land battle phase of Exercise Talisman Sabre 2017 was launched on Thursday, 13 July 2017, with the largest amphibious landing Australian troops had been involved in since the Second World War, with troops transported ashore from an Amphibious Readiness Element including HMAS Canberra, HMAS Choules and HMNZS Canterbury.

Airborne soldiers from the United States, Canada and Australia also parachuted into the Shoalwater Bay Training Area in Central Queensland from six Royal Australian Air Force and United States Air Force C-17 Globemasters that had started their journey in Alaska.

The amphibious landing was the first operation of the land battle phase of Exercise Talisman Sabre 2017, which included 10 days of warfare training at sea, in the air and in the field, by more than 33,000 soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines from Australia, the United States, New Zealand, Canada and Japan, operating in 36 warships, more than 200 military aircraft and in the field.

Exercise Talisman Sabre 2017 (TS17) is a biennial combined Australian and United States training activity, designed to train respective military forces in planning and conducting combined task-force operations to improve the combat readiness and interoperability between the respective forces.
