When DVA saves on travel, who checks whether veterans still get treatment?

Dear Editor,
DVA is entitled to stop paying for unnecessary medical travel.
But before replacing an established journey with a closer provider, it should prove the veteran can actually receive equivalent treatment there.
That means appropriate expertise, available appointments, continuity of care and a safe clinical handover.
Otherwise DVA can save money on travel while the veteran simply stops receiving treatment.
The current Senate inquiry should ask what happens after these travel decisions are made.
A cheaper journey is not a saving if the veteran loses access to necessary care.
