Army trials long-range portable radar
A new long-range radar system capable of detecting threats out to 80km has been trialled alongside Army’s in-service Ground Observer (GO-12) radar, giving soldiers and commanders enhanced surveillance and threat-detection options.

The GO-80, which can detect and track air and maritime targets, small and large ground vehicles and dismounted troops, was shortlisted by Army’s Surveillance and Reconnaissance (S&R) team from a total of 44 radar systems reviewed for suitability.
Funded by the Army Minor Capability Acquisition Program, the trial enabled soldiers to test an emerging capability in a realistic operational environment, helping Army rapidly assess and refine technologies that could enhance future operations.
Incorporated into Exercise Colt in Exmouth, WA, the radars enabled operators to detect threats before launching a Vector unmanned aircraft system to visually confirm them and stream live imagery to headquarters.
The exercise helped soldiers understand how the two systems could work together to provide commanders with the best possible threat detection.
Captain Warrick Bamford, troop commander from Technical Surveillance Troop, Pilbara Regiment, oversaw the deployment of the radars during the exercise.
“It gives commanders more time to react, interrogate the system and make decisions,” Captain Bamford said.
Project manager Chloe Charbonnier, of Land Capability Division, led the integration trial and used soldier feedback to refine how the capability would be employed in the field.
“The team also assessed transportability, equipment layout, cable management and ease of operation to inform future development,” Ms Charbonnier said.
“It’s hard to always understand the operator’s need, so getting their feedback has been really valuable.”
S&R team’s Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Carman said the trial demonstrated how Army could accelerate capability development by evaluating emerging technologies alongside routine training.
“Army Minor Capability Acquisition Program provides the flexibility to pursue new capabilities, confirm their suitability and progress capability development to meet the needs of Army,” he said.
Any decision to introduce the GO-80 into service is pending the trial report and wider consultation.
