Awards recognise supportive Tassie employers

Supportive employers of Tasmanian Defence reservists converged on Government House in Hobart recently for the Tasmania Employer Support Awards.

CAPTION: Army reservist Sergeant Dominic Hendriksen nominated his civilian employer, Chubb Fire and Security, for the Tasmanian Employer Support Awards. Story by Flight Lieutenant Nick O’Connor.

Held annually, the aim of the awards night is to recognise employers from throughout the state who go above and beyond to support their Australian Defence Force reservist employees.

Launceston-based Army reservist Sergeant Dominic Hendriksen nominated his civilian employer, Chubb Fire and Security, in recognition of their flexible leave arrangements and supportive working environment.

“I undertook military training late 2021. This entailed Wednesday webinars and some weekly activities,” Sergeant Hendriksen said.

“Chubb allowed me to use employer-provided ICT equipment and take paid military leave to complete the training. Their ongoing support is much appreciated.”

Head of Joint Support Services Division Major General Douglas Laidlaw congratulated award winners and thanked all employers throughout Tasmania who support their ADF reservist employees.

“The Employer Support Awards acknowledge the contributions made by employers of reservists,” Major General Laidlaw said.

“Every day, employers throughout the nation support reservists through a range of flexible working arrangements and policies. The support provided is not only valued by the reservist, but more broadly the entire Australian Defence Force.”

Major General Laidlaw said there was no doubt Australian business and industry stood to gain from employing and supporting Defence reservists.

“Reservists acquire a wide range of skills, qualities and experience through their Defence training. These are qualities they take back to the workplace,” he said.

“Anyone who employs a Defence reservist has a valuable member on their team, an employee whose training and service ethic drives performance and effectiveness in the workplace.”

Winners of the award categories were:

  • Private Sector – Small: Environmental Service and Design
  • Private Sector – Medium: Chubb Fire and Security
  • Not for Profit: CMS Tasmania and Trevallyn Life Church
  • Public Sector: Royal Hobart Hospital (Tasmanian Health Service)
  • Honourable Mention Public Sector: Clarence City Council

As well as the personal attributes reservists bring to a workplace, there are a range of incentives on offer for support to employers.
