Hey there Brian,
Thought you may have found a small space to notify all and sundry that at last a member of the Royal Australian Navy has been posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for his action aboard HMAS ARMIDALE during W.W.II. Able Seaman Edward (Teddy) Sheehan went down with his ship on December 1st. 1942. There is much that has been fought and written about this heroic young man that I do not need to regurgitate. The R.A.N. been in the fighting in every conflict Australia has been called upon to participate in. I’m sure there are many more circumstances where brave men have faced an enemy and never been acknowledged for their bravery but, I’m certain there are unheralded members of the Australian Defence Forces who are deserved of more than a campaign medal. I won’t go on but the name Capt. Hec Waller DSO and Bar, skipper of HMAS PERTH is example of devoted bravery in the true tradition of the RAN. He went down with his ship during the Battle of the Sunda Straits in December 1942.
I’m sure you are right about many other deserving people and their deeds – but I guess we can’t reward them all.
On the other hand, there are mechanisms in place to right perceived wrongs – just as happened with Sheean. But how many of us have the stamina for a fight that protracted?
Well done to all Sheean’s family and supporters. I’m sure Teddy would be as impressed by their fight as they were by his.
