Allied Data Systems joins more 35 Australian companies in manufacturing the first military aircraft in Australia in more than 50 years.

Allied Data Systems’ CEO Andrew MacLaurin said his team was proud to supply power units to the Loyal Wingman unmanned aircraft with the initial contract helping to support jobs for Allied Data Systems and its subcontractors in New South Wales.

The first Loyal Wingman rolled out yesterday is the first of three prototypes for Australia’s Loyal Wingman program and will serve as the foundation for the Boeing Airpower Teaming System product being developed for the global defence market.

Allied Data Systems has been a supplier to Boeing since the 1990s and is a supplier to a range of products for other defence and commercial programs with Boeing, including the E-7A Wedgetail and the Currawong Battlespace Communication System.

Boeing Airpower Teaming System program director Shane Arnott said the Loyal Wingman was an historic development program for the Australian aerospace industry, Boeing and the entire industry team, who had worked together with speed and agility to deliver this prototype.

“We’ve leveraged the skills of the local supply chain to build a Loyal Wingman that will work together with other airpower teaming assets to provide an unmatched capability for Australia and for our global customers.”

Looks like a Lifting Fuselage Configuration (LFC) so far. Military aviation more and more is going to this. The Loyal Wingman might be improved by replacing the boat like bottom with more of an airfoil shape. Maybe more like this… see Tech Brief Create the Future, Aerospace and Defense, second from bottom.
