To be known as the NHS Nightingale hospital, it is expected to have 4000 beds in two separate wards.

The hospital is expected to admit its first patients early next week.

ExCeL London is an exhibition and convention centre on a 100-acre site at the Royal Victoria Dock in London Docklands, East London.

Army engineers are installing power, lighting, heating, ventilation and sanitation to the hospital, and ensuring oxygen is supplied to intensive-care beds.

Defence Secretary Ben Wallace said the armed-forces had already been distributing personal protective equipment (PPE) all across the country to meet the increased demand and stood ready to assist further in any capacity needed.

“The NHS and our armed forces are both world leaders in their fields, and this ambitious project – NHS Nightingale – is just one example of what can be achieved when they come together to help the nation,” Mr Wallace said.

A number of Army medics will also support the NHS nurses, doctors and other staff from across the health service.
