During the five-day visit, the ship will be involved in a number of events designed to maintain the special bond the Royal Australian Navy enjoys with the residents of Brisbane.

Commanding Officer HMAS Brisbane Commander Josh Wilson, said the ship’s company was especially looking forward to the Freedom of Entry march through the streets of Brisbane, and the open day when the public will be able to inspect the ship first-hand.

“As the third RAN ship to carry the Brisbane name, we are very keen to build on the rapport and support the previous two ships had with the people of Brisbane,” Commander Wilson said.

“With more than 15 Brisbane locals serving as crew members on my ship, our first visit to their home town will be especially important.”

Commander Australian Fleet Rear Admiral Jonathan Mead said HMAS Brisbane, the second Australian-built guided missile destroyer, will increase the Australian Defence Force’s flexibility and lethality throughout our region and beyond.

“This ship is among the most potent warships in the world and forms an essential part of the defence of our nation,” Rear Admiral Mead said.

“Ships that have carried the name Brisbane have an honoured history in the Royal Australian Navy.

“With the motto, ‘Aim at Higher Things’, I am confident all who sail in her will realise the incredible potential she represents.”

The public is welcome to watch the Freedom of Entry march on Saturday 6 April commencing at 10am.
