Watch HMNZS Endeavour broken up for scrap

The Royal New Zealand Navy’s former HMNZS Endeavour was broken up for scrap in India recently.

The New Zealand Defence Force said that following an exhaustive and detailed tender process to ensure a sustainable, ethical and environmentally compliant recycling, Endeavour sailed for India in April this year.

“Under the direct supervision of the NZ Defence Force, a remarkable 98.8% of the ship was either reused (60%) or recycled,” and NZDF Facebook post said.

“The reuse of steel saved 1.5million kilo-watt hours of electricity and prevented 250,000 cubic metres of CO2 emission.

“HMNZS Endeavour provided 30 years of faithful service to the Navy, but when she became no longer compliant, responsible recycling was the only option for her disposal.”

HMNZS Endeavour (A11) was a fleet oiler for the Royal New Zealand Navy, built in South Korea to a commercial tanker design.

She was commissioned on 8 April 1988 and decommissioned on 15 December 2017.

Two ships of the Royal New Zealand Navy (both Antarctic research support vessels) had previously carried the name Endeavour (after James Cook’s Bark Endeavour).

Endeavour will be replace by RNZN’s newest and biggest ever ship, HMNZS Aotearoa, currently under construction in South Korea.
