Navy and RAAF’s arrogant hubris ends tomorrow?

A parade that could mark the end of arrogant hubris in the Royal Australian Navy and Royal Australian Air Force will be held tomorrow in Canberra as Air Chief Marshal Mark Binskin hands over command of the Defence Forces to the man who burst many Army balloons earlier this year.

Army had it’s fun, camaraderie and unit morale cancelled by then Chief of Army Lieutenant General Angus Campbell when he banned ‘death iconography’ in April this year (the day after it was announced he would be the next Chief of Defence Force).

Tomorrow’s parade will feature Australia’s Federation Guard, a didgeridoo performance, an F/A-18 Hornet flypast – and a 17 Gun Salute, to really sound the deathknell for symbols such as Navy’s Jolly Roger and RAAF’s … well, actually, I can’t find any examples of ‘death iconography’ in the RAAF (please send more samples to editor@militarycontact.com).

This just in – a RAAF Wedgetail proudly sporting the Punisher. The unit also wears Punisher shoulder patches and t-shirts. But don't tell the new CDF ;-)
THIS JUST IN – a RAAF Wedgetail proudly sporting the Punisher, with the motto ‘Always watching’. The unit wears matching shoulder patches and t-shirts – but don’t tell the new CDF 😉

Recent Chief of Army Lieutenant General Angus Campbell will be promoted to full General tomorrow when he becomes CDF – presumably wielding his hatred of ‘death iconography’ with a sharpened scythe in his new command.

Or perhaps – and this is my prediction – poor old Army may be left in the sensitive position of having had their beloved PT t-shirts first adamantly banned, then sort of maybe allowed – while Navy and RAAF Punishers, Jolly Rogers and Spartans continue to fly across the world, as the new CDF shies away from a second social-media backlash like the one he suffered in April.

I’ll be inculcating my arrogant observance of this issue over a celebratory bevy all weekend – and beyond.

I totally agree with Eric and Tez. This is a sad period for our defence force being led by all this political correctness crap. He needs to revisit the history of the Services.

This ill-considered piece only demonstrates your lack of understanding of the issue. In a word, it’s just stupid.
Seeing you’re so connected to defence, perhaps you can use your access to speak with the new CDF to try and understand what the current priorities are for our overseas missions.
I doubt that wearing a death mask actually aligns with the mission. What a way to win hearts and minds, huh?
As to the differences between the operations of Army, Navy and RAAF, you ought to know that it’s pretty hard to see death insignia from the shoreline, or on an aeroplane at 30 000 feet.

Maybe you need to learn the difference between news and satire/shit-stirring 😉

I’m not so sure this is a genuine excuse. It read like an opinion piece to me.
        Perhaps satire’s not your thing.

Maybe I’m just too old, cranky and cynical to be humorous or satirical 🙁

Though I do enjoy the odd bit of ‘shit stirring’ here on MY web site 😉

As an Old Sailor I agree with you Eric…I just wonder how many understand the actual meaning of CDF. I sure our mate
      Campbell is sadly lacking?
