From service to advocacy: inspiring journey in veteran healthcare

As a former Maritime Warfare Officer in the Royal Australian Navy, my service took me from the waters of East Timor to the Gulf of Iraq. The camaraderie and shared purpose during those years were unparalleled. However, upon transitioning to civilian life, I recognised a profound gap in healthcare tailored for veterans—a gap I was determined to bridge.

In November 2020, alongside fellow veterans and healthcare professionals, we founded Provocatus, an Australian and veteran-owned pharmaceutical company based on the New South Wales South Coast. Our mission is clear: to alleviate human suffering by providing high-quality, affordable medicines to the Australian market. The name “Provocatus,” derived from Latin meaning “to challenge or provoke,” encapsulates our commitment to challenging the status quo in veteran healthcare.

Our journey was deeply influenced by the story of “Darwin Digger” (DD), a 2 Commando Regiment soldier who sustained severe injuries while serving in Afghanistan. After returning home, DD faced the harsh realities of chronic pain and mental health challenges. Like many veterans, he found himself caught in a cycle of heavy prescription medications, including opioids and antidepressants, which left him unable to fully engage with life. His treatment regimen, though well-intentioned, caused significant side effects, creating a frustrating and often isolating experience.

Under the care of Dr Michael Mumford, our Medical Director and former Combat Engineer, DD’s treatment plan was transformed. Dr Mumford worked closely with DD to develop a more effective and compassionate approach to managing his chronic pain and mental health. For the first time in years, DD experienced an improved quality of life. Tragically, despite these efforts, DD took his own life in 2018, a loss that serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for comprehensive and individualised care for our veteran community.

Our team at Provocatus understands the unique challenges veterans face. The Veteran Access Scheme™ is designed to support the health and wellbeing of ADF veterans by providing access to quality medicines and connecting them with trusted healthcare providers. We believe in a holistic approach, focusing on medication, appliances, clinical wellness, and health education to address chronic health issues and enhance overall wellbeing.

Reflecting on my journey from naval service to leading Provocatus, I am reminded of the resilience and strength inherent in our veteran community. It is this spirit that drives us to innovate and advocate for better health outcomes for all veterans. Together, we can create a brighter future for those who have served our nation.
