After an intensive maintenance period, Lieutenant Commander Leupen – already affectionately known as ‘Captain Leups’ to the youth crew – steps into his new role in the wake of departing Commanding Officer Lieutenant Commander Elizabeth Newman, or ‘Captain Libby’, who is off to chart new waters as the Commanding Officer of a Navy Patrol Boat.
This change in leadership marks a milestone for the Young Endeavour Youth Scheme, as Lieutenant Commander Leupen may be the final Commanding Officer of STS Young Endeavourbefore the ship is succeeded by STS Young Endeavour II.
“I’m both excited and deeply honoured to be taking command of Young Endeavour,” Lieutenant Commander Leupen said.
“I believe there is magic in the hardship and beauty of life at sea and I can’t wait to share this with the youth of Australia.”
Lieutenant Commander Newman, who made history as Young Endeavour’s first female captain, leaves the ship with countless unforgettable memories.
“It’s been an absolute honour and privilege to command STS Young Endeavour,” Lieutenant Commander Newman said.
“From challenging ocean passages to seeing youth crew members grow into confident leaders, this experience will stay with me forever.”
Under new leadership, STS Young Endeavour is set to sail full-speed ahead to new horizons, continuing a legacy of adventure, leadership and personal growth for all who step aboard.

I reckon I could have stayed at sea forever if I had a ‘forever’ posting to Young Endeavour. Unfortunately, I was definitely in the wrong branch and they don’t allow ‘forever’ postings.
