The winners of the awards were announced at a recent ceremony in Victoria Barracks, Sydney.

The evening recognised businesses that are going beyond to support Defence capability, through the understanding, flexibility and commitment provided to their Defence reservist employees.

Megan Stifler, Deputy Commissioner of NSW Fire and Rescue, accepted the award for the public sector category.

“It is an honour to receive this award especially as we are an attractive employer for reservists and veterans.” Deputy Commissioner Stiffler said.

“Fire and Rescue share the same values as Defence. We have similar expectations of our people and that facilitates strong working relationships for those in our shared workforce.”

Andrew Abel, CEO from King Cain Solicitors, accepted the small private sector award.

“For us as a small private business, there is nothing more important than supporting our national security and if we can do that in some small way, such as releasing our key personnel and solicitors to get out there with the Defence reserves, it’s our absolute privilege to do so,” Mr Abel said.

Major General Douglas Laidlaw, Head Joint Support Services Division, hosted the event, with senior ADF officials and prominent members of the NSW business community in attendance.

Major General Laidlaw said the awards showcase employers that have demonstrated outstanding support to their staff who conduct ADF service.

“Nationally, reserves make up 30 per cent of our total ADF workforce with approximately 8600 reservists from NSW who contribute vital skills and capability to the defence of our nation,” Major General Laidlaw said.

“Our NSW employers … are exemplifying outstanding support to reservists and therefore to Defence capability.

“It is through this support that Defence is able to achieve its mission and protect our national interests.

“Whether it be through your flexibility, financial contributions, understanding, commitment or a mix of these, you are leading the way in supporting Defence reservists.”
