Defence announced today it is aware of a People’s Liberation Army-Navy (PLA-N) intelligence collection vessel operating off the north-west shelf of Australia.

“Defence can confirm the vessel is a PLA-N, Dongdiao-class auxiliary intelligence ship named Haiwangxing,” the Defence statement said.
“Haiwangxing travelled down the west coast of Australia to the vicinity of Exmouth, before changing course to track east along the north-west coast.”

[CONTACT confused about the source, however, since Defence only mentioned aircraft surveillance]

Defence’s statement today also said that it “is actively monitoring the current activities of the Chinese intelligence collection vessel off the north-west coast of Western Australia with a combination of air and maritime capabilities” – despite supplying a map showing they believe/predict it is currently tracking close to Darwin.
“Defence will continue to monitor the ship’s operation in our maritime approaches.
“Australia respects the right of all states to exercise freedom of navigation and overflight in international waters and airspace, just as we expect others to respect our right to do the same,” Defence’s **MEDIA ALERT** said.
So let me get this straight – Defence says a Chinese ship is in international waters, doing nothing wrong, and is perfectly entitled to be there – so let’s put out a **MEDIA ALERT** to tell everyone.
OK – thanks Defence. I guess I’m now alert
– but not alarmed 😉

Shush, don’t tell anyone 😉

With negligible protection of Australia’s resource rich north west economic engine room and real hardware stashed far away across the Nullarbor I prefer not to see a proven aggressor so close to our coast. Satellite will provide them with what they need to know. Even with Darwin Port leased to the Chinese and Curtin devoid, Exmouth is ours.
Be Alert…..cause the world needs more lerts.
