Sergeant Bert off to flying start in Kokoda-length trek

Sergeant Bert Le-Merton is off to a flying start – already ahead of his 1km/day target and more than doubling his fundraising goal.

Just three days in to his 96km Kokoda-distance fundraising trek, 101-year-old Sergeant Bert has already clocked 5.25km with more than $21,000 raised.

The Aussie centenarian, who saw action in North Africa and the Western Pacific, is on a mission to raise funds to help Soldier On deliver services and programs to modern-day veterans and their families.

Although officially starting his march on Saturday – VP Day – Bert’s campaign got off to a flier the day before, thanks in the main to an awesome three-minute slot on Channel 9 News that saw him pass his fundraising goal of $10,000 before 8pm Friday.

But, while Sergeant Bert is doing his bit ‘just walking around the block’, the fundraising side has slowed somewhat from the the initial frenzy.

So, if you want to see our very own fair dinkum Aussie walking legend beat ‘that other guy‘, please pop over to the March On with Bert page to make your pledge of support to a very worthy cause.
