Engineers and support staff from the 2nd Combat Engineer Regiment (2CER) welcomed the Governor General at the Army’s Southport Depot to discuss Australian Defence Force support to the games.

2CER personnel are assisting the Queensland Police Service with security in the lead-up to and during the high-profile sporting event, which is being conducted over 11 days from 4 to 15 April.

Engineer support involves searching and clearance of key sporting locations and of vehicles entering venues to ensure the safety of athletes and visitors attending events.

Engineer support is just one aspect of ADF support to security for the Commonwealth Games, which also includes Army aviation with MRH90 Taipan helicopters, Royal Australian Navy clearance divers and RAAF F/A-18 Hornets.

Defence has extensive experience providing security assistance to major national events including the the 2000 Sydney Olympics, the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, the G20 Leaders’ Summit in 2014, and other major events.
