Interest in an inaugural Veteran Career Expo in Sydney next month has exceeded the expectations of organisers with more than 180 actual job opportunities to be offered to Australian military veterans at the event.
Organised by veteran employment advocate WithYouWithMe, the inaugural Veteran Career Expo – on Wednesday 4 October – already has 100 veterans registered to attend, out of a planned maximum capacity for just 120.
However, with at least 180 jobs already lined up, WithYouWithMe CEO Tom Moore says his company may have to look at putting on more coffee and catering staff.
“We thought we were dreaming big for this first event, but the response from both the veteran community and industry has thus far been almost overwhelming,” Mr Moore said.
“Of course we always knew how skilled, competent and motivated our separating military veterans are and everyone knows that smart businesses want to hire the best people – so it was obvious to us that the two sides needed to be brought together some how.
“We dared to dream big for our Veteran Career Expo, but, as an inaugural event there was always a level of doubt in our thinking.
“As it turns out, however, both sides of the equation have come out much stronger than we anticipated – and that’s a win-win for everyone concerned.”
Mr Moore said the inaugural Veteran Career Expo at Sydney Uni Business School CBD Campus on 4 October was designed around keynote-speaker sessions, ‘speed interviews’ and opportunities for veterans and employers to mingle and ask/answer questions.
“One major employer is actually bringing 15 HR professionals to conduct interviews for more than 30 job opportunities commencing early next year,” he said.
Registrations for veterans and employers are still open at www.withyouwithme.com.au/sydneycareerexpo/
